Riccia fluitans, a nice floating plant
Riccia fluitans is one of the liverwort genus, an aquatic floating plant. We hobbyist call it moss but it is not. Because of Mr. Takashi Amano, the great aquascaper, this liverwort got fame in the aquarium hobby.
One of the easiest aquarium plants to grow in both, low-tech and high-tech conditions, but it is so fragile that needs to be handle with care. It grows dense if you have good lighting and Co2 supply. You can keep this in low-tech setup with slow growth rate and not much dense. In high-tech planted aquarium, make sure this plant is not floating otherwise it will cover the entire surface. It is non-demanding plant in our opinion.
It looks great when oxygen bubbles form over it. If you have breeding setup then, this floating plant will provide hiding place for fries. Attached Riccia fluitans need to trim regularly otherwise the bottom portion of the plant will rot and it will detach from the surface.
Do’s and Don’t with Riccia fluitans
The best part of Riccia fluitans is, it can grow on any surface like rocks, wood, net or the surface you like. Keep in mind, this is the fastest growing plant in your Co2 enriched environment. You should take some precautions with this plant because it can spread throughout the aquarium and you will not have control over it. In other words, it can grow in any place which it gets to establish, it can ruin your aquascape by growing everywhere. Another thing to take in consideration is, it is algae magnet. Keep your aquarium in good conditions and do regular water change atleast once in week.
